Unlike the flat, structured silhouette of a traditional platter tutu, Romantic and Degas tutus are designed with soft layers of tulle or net that fall naturally around the dancer. They are never hooped, allowing the skirt to move beautifully and softly with the dancer on stage.
Each costume is individually made to the dancer's measurements and can be created for ballet competitions, classical variations and professional stage performances.
What Is a Romantic Tutu?
The Romantic tutu is distinguished by its beautiful long, flowing silhouette. The skirt generally reaches approximately ankle level, creating the soft and ethereal appearance traditionally associated with the Romantic era of ballet.
This elegant style is particularly beautiful for ballets such as Giselle and La Sylphide, where the movement of the long layers contributes to the dreamlike quality of the choreography and stage presentation.
Our Romantic tutus are generally constructed with approximately 4–6 soft layers of tulle or net, depending on the particular costume and design. The layers are allowed to fall naturally without a hoop, creating softness and movement rather than the firm horizontal structure of a platter tutu.
What Is a Degas Tutu?
A Degas tutu has the same beautifully soft and flowing character but is generally shorter than a traditional Romantic tutu.
Inspired by the graceful ballet dancers famously depicted in the works of Edgar Degas, the skirt usually falls just below the knee. This creates an elegant silhouette that allows more of the dancer's legs and footwork to remain visible while preserving the softness and movement of a longer classical skirt.
Degas-style tutus can be a beautiful choice for roles and variations from ballets such as Coppélia, La Fille Mal Gardée and other works where a softer classical silhouette is appropriate.
Soft, Unhooped Construction
One of the most important characteristics of both Romantic and Degas tutus is their soft construction.
These tutus do not contain a hoop. Instead, their layers are designed to fall gently around the dancer, allowing the skirt to respond naturally to movement and choreography.
Depending on the costume, approximately 4–6 layers of soft tulle or net are generally used. The exact number may vary according to the design and the silhouette required for the particular role.
